In planning a career in Pharmacy, consider the benefits offered at Bluewater Health. We serve the health-care needs of a population 127,000 strong in Sarnia-Lambton. Our three hospital sites are: Charlotte Eleanor Englehart (CEE) in Petrolia, and the Mitton and Norman/Russell sites in Sarnia. Being a part of the pharmacy team here means being a vital component of a patient-centered hospital system providing Pharmacy services to acute care, longterm care, primary care, palliative care, rehabilitation, maternity and infant care and outpatient services including oncology. Our dedication is rrooted in our hospital’s mission to be the best community hospital in Ontario.

Bluewater Health offers full-time and part-time pharmacy opportunities in a supportive environment. Our physicians, nurses, and patients rely on the expertise of our pharmacists and technicians, so their knowledge is an asset we value and nurture.
Pharmacists with solid interpersonal abilities, keen attention to details, and effective communication skills do well in our community hospital environment. In addition to providing prescribed medications, drugs and other pharmaceutical compound medications, they will
•   Review and assess the physician’s medication order using the patient’s medication profile and/or chart
•   monitor patient response and recommend changes in therapy where necessary
•   monitor lab results and other clinical indicators
•   consult with and advise medical staff on use of drugs and pharmaceuticals
•   provide information to physicians, nurses and other staff members on drug availability; along with any safety, incompatibility, and contraindication concerns

•   advise patients and their families on medications
•   maintain established departmental policies and procedures as well as safety standards
•   provide guidance and direction to pharmacy technicians
•   register for educational programs, in-service meetings and workshops and
•   participate in multidisciplinary rounds, hospital committees and other meetings.

Continued learning
Bluewater Health encourages and supports educational opportunities. Our commitment to Pharmacy students is threefold. We are a University of Toronto Structured Practical Experience Program (SPEP) training site and have applied to participate in the Waterloo Co-op placement program We also hire pharmacy students during the summer months; those we welcome receive first-hand experience being part of a team in the pharmacy environment.
Our employees are given an orientation into the operations of the hospital and the department. Our department provides a CIVA (Centralized Intravenous Admixture) program, chemotherapy IV preparation, as well as state of the art dispensing equipment such as PACMED for unit dose medication packaging, and AcuDose Medication Dispensing Cabinets- all supported by the Meditech hospital wide computer system .
Directed within a skilled and supportive team, our pharmacists gain confidence in their knowledge of pharmaceutical care. They also provide patient counselling, medication reconciliation and nursing in-service as a way to disseminate updates on drug therapy. Our pharmacy technicians are trained in entering medication orders which enables pharmacists to improve their capabilities in clinical pharmacy and drug information.

Professional development
Education goes far with our pharmacists. Funding through Bluewater Health Foundation is available to help them upgrade their skills, attend information conferences or further their educational studies. Onsite, we ensure pharmacy staff has consistent access to information through Lunch and Learns, which are held regularly on a range of topics relating to medication trends and refresher sessions on patient care.

Staff pharmacists looking to advance in their careers can continue their studies and qualify for senior positions, such as the Clinical Practice Leader. In this role, the pharmacist offers advanced clinical pharmacy and research skills, along with project management and leadership skills, and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with health professionals. Working in this capacity is a rewarding challenge.

There exists opportunities for initiating, developing and implementing standards of practice and procedures for clinical, education and research programs. There is also a rotation of clinical pharmacists which helps to further solidify the team’s expertise within our patient-centered model of care.

We’re building!
Bluewater Health is in the process of building a new hospital onto the current Norman/Russell site to be completed in 2010. The $319 million construction project will consolidate the Norman and Mitton sites into a 588,400 square foot state-of-the-art facility. The result will yield new centralized, on-site programs and services in an enhanced environment; thus, continuing Bluewater Health’s advancement in providing high-quality health care.
